There are many, many lures that you can get to catch trout. So many that you will wonder, which one is the best. Almost all of them are good but the preference is up to you, and you will have a special lure that you will like the best.
A spinner is a good choice. These lures are used to imitate small bait fish that the trout feed on. Although a spinner don't actually look like a minnow they flash and give an impression of a school of small minnows. A spinner is a good choice for fishing Steelhead in the spring spawning run. Fish them by casting them up stream of the deeper holes and reel them back with just enough speed to keep them just off the bottom. You want to tick the bottom once in awhile and you will lose a few good trout fishing lures but this is the area where the fish are whether you are fishing for steelhead or any trout any time of the year. If your spinner is very light and you can't get it to go deep enough you will have to use some split shot ahead of the lure to make it go deeper.
Another type of lure is the spoon and it is just what the name says it is, the cup part of a spoon with a hook attached to one end. They normally have enough weight that with a spinning outfit they cast very well. You can cast them upstream, across the stream, downstream or any place you think a trout will hide like under cut banks, next to gig rocks or boulders and reel them in with just enough speed to make them wobble and dart back and forth looking like a minnow that may be wounded. Small spoons are usually best for trout and they come in different weight, color, shapes and sizes.
There are many other lures that will catch trout. A spinner with a rooster tail is another good one The rooster tail is made out of the fur of different animals an attached to the back of a lure and it can be used on many different kinds of trout fishing lures. Some other types of lures look like minnows or other types of food fish like and will have a lip on the front that can be tweaked to make them run deeper or shallower.
Normally you will cast up stream when spin cast fishing. Up and across is sometimes best to reach good fish hiding cover such as, under cut banks, log jams and other good places fish can hide and still feed. The most important thing is to keep trying different things until you find the one that suits you best and have fun.
